Many times when I suggest smoothies to people they are immediately dismissive because of the ice cream, yogurts and dairy items people often add. Fortunately, you can make delicious smoothies and enjoy many health benefits without adding those things.
I’ve been making smoothies for years and this is my favorite recipe. It makes me feel amazing and it taste delicious! It usually makes 2 quarts – one for you and one to share with a friend (or save for later). 🙂
Green Power Smoothie
add to your blender…
- 1 avocado
- 1 banana
- 1/2 – 1 cup fresh pineapple, mango, berries or other fruit
- 1-2 tsp of Black Strap Molasses (read more about this super food)
- 1-2 Tbsp Aloe Vera (aids digestion and so much more… read here)
- 1 inch fresh ginger (you may need to grate it first to prevent chucks)
- 1-2 tsp Organic Chlorophyll (helps eliminate the need of deodorant)
- 2 Tbsp Organic Hemp Seed Protein Powder from Nutiva
- a dash of organic cinnamon, cardamon, clove and cayenne
- Local organic honey (as needed for taste)
- 1/2 lime or lemon (fresh squeezed)
- enough carrot, orange or apple juice to almost cover ingredients in your blender
- or replace the juice with an herbal tea
Cutting down on Sugar…
I enjoy juicing veggies and really love adding fresh carrot juice to this recipe, but when I’m traveling or if we run out of carrots (or fruit juice) I’ll infuse some water with lemongrass, mint, sage, or another herb and use it to replace the juice. That’s a great way to cut down on sugar, but remember, natural sugar is much better for you than that candy bar or soda you normally crave. Enjoying the natural sugars now might help eliminate the cravings later in the day.
What about the fat of that Avocado?
It is true that avocados have a lot of fat. Approximately 20 times the average of other fruits, however, it is mostly the monounsaturated fat which is a healthy fat variety. That’s good for you!
It’s a Super Food!
Apart from that, avocados are also considered as one of the healthiest foods in the planet as they contain in excess of 25 essential nutrients, including vitamin A, B, C, E, & K, copper, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. Avocados also contain fiber, protein, and several beneficial phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol, glutathione and lutein, which may protect against various disease and illness. More on the health benefits of avocados.
Black Strap Molasses is another Super Food! It has high levels of iron and lots of other nutrients, including vitamin B6, calcium, manganese, magnesium and potassium. It helps make stronger bones, gives more energy, provides antioxidant protection, reduces the risk of heart attack, cleanse the colon of toxins and so much more.
Shhhh…. it’s my Secret
The truth is…. I don’t like the taste of Black Strap Molasses or avocados or honey or hemp seeds, but I want to enjoy their health benefits. The magic of a smoothie is that when you mix these things into a smoothie – you don’t normally taste them! That’s fantastic!
What is this Chlorophyll stuff?
Chlorophyll is another incredible secret! If you suffer from body odor and you don’t have time to make a smoothie, just add a teaspoon or two to a glass of water – you’ll be surprised at how much this helps!
It’s a lifestyle!
It’s only when you make healthy choices every day that you really start to benefit. One serving of black strap molasses isn’t going to make your bones stronger or your heart healthier and one avocado today isn’t going to give you protein or iron tomorrow. It’s when you start adding these great foods into a daily eating plan that your body really starts to benefit. So, find ways to eat more raw fruits and vegetables and you’ll start finding a new you!
Love yourself enough to enjoy the finer things in life.
